Pacific launches new degrees at Sacramento Campus

To serve the emerging needs of the region's working professionals and employers, University of the Pacific, Sacramento, is introducing new master's degree programs in analytics and education and a new bachelor of science program in organizational behavior.

The analytics program - already offered on Pacific's San Francisco campus - will be the first of its kind in the Sacramento region. It will prepare students for such jobs as data scientist, just named the No. 1 best job in America by Glassdoor. According to Glassdoor, data scientists bring home a median base salary of $116,840, and demand for these professionals in Northern California is expected to exceed 40 percent in coming years. The program will launch in January.

Also unique in the region, the new master's degree program in education will focus on organizational learning and effectiveness. The program is designed for organizational leaders and those interested in organizational development, human resources and training. The job market in these fields is rosy: Glassdoor ranked "engagement manager" as the fourth best career in America, and HR manager as the sixth, with median base salaries of $125,000 and $85,000, respectively. The program will open its doors this fall.

The bachelor of science in organizational behavior program is designed to serve working adults who need credits to complete their degree. This hybrid program will give students the critical thinking, leadership, human resources, financial management and decision-making skills required to lead companies in the 21st century. According to U.S. News and World Report, the median annual earnings for full-time working college-degree holders are $17,500 greater than for those with high school diplomas only. The first Sacramento students will start classes in January.

"Pacific continues to prepare its students for success by offering these new and innovative programs," said University of the Pacific Provost Maria Pallavicini. "We are proud to be able to expand our educational service and influence in Sacramento."

The new programs bring the total number of degrees that will be offered at Pacific's Sacramento Campus to 12. Pacific announced last spring that it would be expanding the campus into an interdisciplinary center focused on educating the professionals California needs in the decades ahead at the intersection of law, policy, business and health.

The newest degree programs join previously announced programs that will lead to a master of public policy (MPP), master of public administration (MPA) or master of physician assistant studies (MPAS) degree. The MPP and MPA, the only such degrees offered by a law school, will begin this fall. The physician assistant program will begin in spring 2017, pending accreditation by the national Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant.
