Welcome to Counseling and Psychological Services!

Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) at the University of the Pacific provides a broad range of therapeutic services including group therapy, individual, couples sessions, informal consultations, and online assisted therapy for students experiencing emotional distress, anxiety, depression, adjustment concerns, and/or more serious mental health issues. CAPS also offers psychiatric medication management, crisis consultation, and preventative outreach/education on a variety of mental health topics.

Our Pledge of Support

CAPS would like to express our pledge of support to our students, to the campus community, and to the community as a whole as actions of hatred and threats of violence continue to occur in the world around us. CAPS stands by all communities who are targets for oppression, aggression, microaggressions, and discrimination. Particularly now, as Black lives continue to be targeted and Police Officers are being retaliated against, it is essential that we come together as a community to promote civil discourse and respect. CAPS at the University of the Pacific condemns the murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and the countless others who have died as a result of this unjust and inequitable system.

When our community is shaken by tragic or abhorrent events on campus or beyond, the CAPS staff wants to acknowledge the impact of these events on the students we serve, and the faculty and staff with whom we work. As believers in every human being’s potential for healing and growth, we hold firm the values of inclusion, multicultural diversity, multicultural humility, and social justice. We believe in empowering all people, including those who are marginalized and oppressed, to act together peacefully, to challenge injustice, to condemn discrimination, and to promote a common humanity of equitable treatment and social cooperation.

We strive to foster a community of safety, openness, acceptance, and understanding. All of us, including the CAPS staff, are uniquely affected and respond to controversial and discriminatory acts differently, with an array of complex emotions and viewpoints. We applaud the tireless efforts of campus organizations, student groups, and committed individuals who provide spaces for discussion of all forms of inequality at our University and in our world.

We join voices in making this pledge to all Pacific students, staff, and faculty: Your perspective, values, and experiences are welcomed and will be honored at and by CAPS.

You will be safe.

You will be respected.

You will be heard.

We invite students to reach out to CAPS as needed for support, and faculty and staff for tailored outreach programs, or for referrals to support in the community. We can be reached by phone at 209.946.2315 x2. On call 24/7 therapeutic support can be accessed by calling 209.946.2315 x3.

A Message from our Director

Pacific CAPS wants to extend our support and commitment to the Pacific community as we navigate the impacts related to COVID-19. Reactions like fears, anxiety, stress, confusion, isolation, uncertainty, and depression may be common during this time.

All of our therapists are trained in telemental health and have the necessary equipment to provide ethical, legal, and competent telemental health services to our students who are remaining in the state of California. CAPS appointments will be conducted using telemental health services until restrictions are lifted. For more information about our Telemental Health Services, including our Tiger Talkvirtual gathering support, please click here. For students who are not in California, we can help you find resources in your local area, additionally there are limited funds available from the university that may be used to help with emergency expenses related to your mental health.

All students have access to our telephone therapist at 209.946.2315 x3. Students also have access to TAO regardless of where they are residing. We have additional options for students such as crisis text lines/phone lines, helpful mental health apps, and specific support related to COVID-19 at Other Therapeutic Options.

Any students who have questions about mental health services, how to access them, or what the next step is in regard to their mental health can call 209.946.2312 x2 and speak to someone on the CAPS staff to get their questions answered. We will continue to put a lot of tips and strategies for managing mental health on our social media platforms InstagramFacebook, and Twitter.
